From My Desk...
Each week, I’ll be sharing a little about what’s happening in my world—whether it’s in my role as a cardiologist, the work I’m doing with the Healthy Heart Network and our new Healthy Life Network, or even personal updates from my family and life. My goal is to give you a closer look at what’s been keeping me busy, while also sharing tips and insights to help you on your own heart health journey. I hope you enjoy these updates and find them helpful as you strive to live well and stay healthy.
Hello and welcome to this week's Healthy Life Network.
A full week, in every sense. Some genuinely proud moments, a few laughs at my own expense, and real progress across the businesses. Let's get into it.
By the way, you may have received a couple of weeks in short notice, apologies from our end. That was the CRM playing up, a small ghost in the machine that we have hopefully sorted out, let's get on to this week and then continue on a weekly basis.
Family & Personal Highlights
The biggest moment of the week, without question... the physical copies of Cholesterol Explained arrived. Mine, John and Karam's both landed. Locally, my daughter Ella was good enough to collect them for me and deliver them to the house. Holding it in print is a different feeling entirely. I've already taken a box round to Penny so she has a few to share. It looks fantastic.
I also had a wonderful podcast conversation with Steve Fenton, a fellow cardiologist and fellow believer in prevention. We sat down to discuss his new book, The 5CH Lifestyle, and ranged well beyond that into heart health, and what it really takes to prevent heart attack and reduce mortality from heart disease. Just wonderful to catch up with him....keep an eye out for the "Pod".
Chelle and I had date night on Wednesday. Cold night, twenty-five-minute walk to an Indian restaurant we'd booked in Battery Point... except when we went to pay, it turned out we'd walked into entirely the wrong restaurant. Booking and all. We still had a great night. Got home in time for State of Origin, and I have to say, Queensland barely turned up. New South Wales dominated and deserved the win.
Coffee with Wendy Kennedy, CEO of Men's Sheds Tasmania, on Thursday morning. It had taken a while to find a time, given how busy she is, but it was well worth the wait. She's caring, compassionate, and genuinely wants to make a difference for the men who attend the Sheds. We talked about developing some educational material for the men and their families, and I'll likely speak at one of their regional events in August. Real energy in that conversation.
Later that day, Cameron our builder came through to talk partitioning for the Longevity Lab space, working out how the HOCATT™ and the oxygen nanobubble spa will sit and flow together. I think we've landed on a plan.
We were also privileged to support Hype Gym 24 over the weekend, a fundraiser for bone cancer research. Corbin Halliday made the introduction. Sky and Connie from Hype Gym were wonderful, we met owner Ed, and Sarah Morrison, a great supporter of good causes around town. Sarah (our nurse) and Sean spent much of the twenty-four hours offering IVs and injections to support people through the event. A genuinely good thing to be part of.
And I nearly forgot... we celebrated Jen's fiftieth birthday. Chelle and I joined Michael and Jen at the revolving restaurant at the casino. Jen heads up the breathwork side of Longevity Lab and is doing an amazing job. A dear friend, and a lovely night.
Max has been up and down health-wise, but he and Katie keep finding adventures. He did his first lead rock climb this week, using pitons rather than traditional protection, which had us comparing notes... mine, many years ago, was all traditional climbing, placing your own gear as you go. Different world, but good to know he's out there feeling that mix of fear and exhilaration.
Ella and Tallam are flat out getting organised for their trip away. Two beautiful people, and I couldn't be more excited for them.
On a personal note, I've started seeing a woman called Osteo Pam about my long-term painful calves, which have kept me from running for something like thirty years. No promises yet, but I need to do something, or I'll simply keep slowing down.
Chelle and I are also busy organising tickets to Date With Destiny in Miami this December. We went last year and it was life changing, so we're genuinely excited to be heading back.
And I dropped in to see Dad during the week. He's had his ups and downs with Parkinson's, but he gave a talk to U3A on the history of the pulp and paper industry in Australia, and also spoke about aspects of Parkinson's disease itself. Doing a great job. Very proud of him.
Professional & Business Updates
OsteoStrong™ Hobart
Good momentum here. Chris is back on deck after some time off and doing really well. Leads coming through from our US lead gen platform have been solid, both in number and quality, and for the first time in a while there's a genuine sense of momentum building. We're also looking at bringing in AI technology to engage with leads from the first point of contact, so people get a clearer picture of what we offer straight away. Bone Buddies hasn't launched yet... mainly because we want the staffing in place before we open it up properly.
Longevity Lab
A big week for the rebrand. We've received the full marketing playbook from Robbie, and it repositions us properly... science meets wellbeing. We genuinely believe there's something special we can offer Hobart here, bringing real science and technology into people's wellbeing journey. That playbook is now the foundation for a new website, which John North is helping build, with Sean coordinating everything centrally. Ella continues to help with social media, which has been great, and Chelle has been fantastic both upstairs and downstairs in the business.
Also this week, I met with the team from Sisu Health, a preventative health organisation, to explore a potential partnership around calcium scoring. Genuinely interesting conversation, early days, but promising.
The HOCATT™ is on its way, paperwork underway, and plenty of smaller pieces still to organise. I've also been chasing down the final plans for the oxygen nanobubble spa, and tidying up my NuCalm platinum membership with a view to offering it as part of a workplace stress service down the track.
Breath Lab
Jen continues to lead this beautifully, and her "zero" birthday this week was a good reminder of how much she brings to it.
Podcast Highlight
EP446: GLP-1 Agonists and Amazing Drugs — Father and Son, Part 1
This one is genuinely special to me. It's not my first father-son podcast... I sat down with Stephen and Sam Crean a few weeks back... but this time it's my own son joining me in the chair. Max and I got into GLP-1 agonists and the broader conversation around these remarkable new drugs, what they can do, and where the caution still needs to sit. Recording this together was a real privilege.
Part 1 of 2, so there's more to come.
If you'd like to hear more of Max on the podcast, let us know... we'd love the feedback.

Quiz Corner
Last Week's Answer
Regular breathwork practice is one of the best-supported lifestyle factors for improving heart rate variability. Slow, controlled breathing... particularly around six breaths a minute... shifts the balance toward the parasympathetic nervous system and measurably lifts HRV over time. Other factors that help: good sleep, regular moderate exercise, and reducing alcohol.
This Week's Question
Menopause week. Two to think about:
At what age does the average Australian woman reach menopause?
What are three of the most common symptoms women experience in the lead-up to menopause?
(Answers next week.)
Final Reflection
A book in your hands is a different thing to a book in your head. This week reminded me that most of what matters... the writing, the businesses, the people around you... only becomes real once you let it out into the world and let others carry it too.
Warm regards,
