Week #91: 🌿 Summits, Adventures, and a Search engine worth bookmarking

From My Desk...

Each week, I’ll be sharing a little about what’s happening in my world—whether it’s in my role as a cardiologist, the work I’m doing with the Healthy Heart Network and our new Healthy Life Network, or even personal updates from my family and life. My goal is to give you a closer look at what’s been keeping me busy, while also sharing tips and insights to help you on your own heart health journey. I hope you enjoy these updates and find them helpful as you strive to live well and stay healthy.

Hello and welcome to this week's Healthy Life Network.

A week of good conversations, meaningful community engagement, and some real milestones across the businesses.

A lot moving, and most of it in the right direction.

Family & Personal Highlights

The highlight of the week personally was dinner with Ella and her partner Tallam. It was just really lovely. Watching them both grow into such grounded, thoughtful young people is lovely. They are preparing for a big adventure... heading off in July with no fixed return date, travelling around Australia. They will start by making their way to Victoria to visit family in the farmland northwest of Melbourne, and go from there. Open road, open plans. Exciting times.

Max is still up in Far North Queensland, working as a concreter and loving it. Katie is well too. Good to hear they are both thriving.

Chelle has been working incredibly hard across OsteoStrong™ Hobart, and it is showing. Chris continues to do a great job on the marketing and sales front, and Sean remains outstanding across everything he takes on. And of course we couldn't do it without our fabulous coaches. It is a good team, and real momentum is building.

Professional & Business Updates

OsteoStrong™ Hobart

Earlier this week I had the opportunity to speak to the Parkinson's Support Group in Sandy Bay. A genuinely rewarding session. The overlap between OsteoStrong™ and neurological conditions like Parkinson's is meaningful... balance, strength, and neurological benefit are all directly relevant for this group. I also spent some time in the centre this week, and it was good to be there.

Longevity Labs IV

A significant milestone this week... I have started paying for our HOCATT unit. That is a real step forward. We are also advancing the oxygen nanobubble water, which will be another first for Tasmania when it arrives.

Our VO2 Max equipment is also progressing well. This is going to be a genuinely exciting addition to what we can offer. You can get a glimpse of where things are heading here.

I am also sourcing heart rate variability monitors so we can begin tracking measurable responses to Jen's breathwork sessions. The goal is to move from anecdote to data... giving clients something tangible to see and track over time.

Breath Lab

Jen continues to lead sessions with real care and skill. With HRV monitoring on the way, we will soon be able to show what many clients already feel... that breathwork genuinely shifts the nervous system in ways that can be measured.

Podcast / YouTube Highlight

EP444: Father and Son Chiropractors — Drs Crean

This week's episode is one I particularly enjoyed. I sat down with Stephen and Sam Crean... a father and son chiropractic duo from Hobart and Kingston Chiropractic here in Tasmania. My first ever father and son podcast, as it happens.

The conversation goes well beyond backs. About 60% of their practice consists of patients over 50, and the focus on mobility, neurological function, independence, and fall prevention is directly relevant to so much of what we talk about here. There is a real alignment between what they do and what we do at OsteoStrong™ Hobart... the two approaches complement each other beautifully.

A good listen for anyone thinking about how to stay mobile and capable as the years go on.

A Tool Worth Knowing About

I also want to draw your attention to something new on my podcast page... a dedicated search engine for the entire podcast library.

Type in "blood pressure" and you will get every episode that has covered it. Type in "PEMF," "cholesterol," "sleep," or any topic you are curious about, and it will find exactly what you need. It is a large library now, and this makes it navigable.

Quiz Corner

Last Week's Answer — Gout

Last week I asked three questions about gout. Here are the answers.

Gout tends to affect men more than women, particularly those with higher uric acid levels... often linked to diet, alcohol intake, kidney function, and genetics. Women become more susceptible after menopause. Those with obesity, high blood pressure, or kidney disease are also at greater risk.

Gout is diagnosed through a combination of clinical presentation... typically a sudden, intensely painful, red and swollen joint, often the big toe... along with blood tests measuring uric acid, and sometimes analysis of joint fluid to identify uric acid crystals under a microscope.

Management includes medications to reduce uric acid levels, anti-inflammatories during acute attacks, and lifestyle changes... particularly reducing purine-rich foods, alcohol (especially beer), and staying well hydrated.

This Week's Question

Name one supplement that has evidence for supporting mitochondrial function.

(Answer next week.)

Final Reflection

This Sunday I joined a panel at the Tasmanian Menopause Summit to discuss menopause and cardiovascular risk. It is a topic that deserves more attention than it typically receives.

There is a window in a woman's health... around and after menopause... where cardiovascular risk quietly shifts. Being part of conversations that bring that into focus feels worthwhile.

Sometimes showing up and having the right conversation is the most useful thing you can do.

Warm regards,
