Hi {contactfield=firstname},
From My Desk...
Each week, I’ll be sharing a little about what’s happening in my world—whether it’s in my role as a cardiologist, the work I’m doing with the Healthy Heart Network and our new Healthy Life Network, or even personal updates from my family and life. My goal is to give you a closer look at what’s been keeping me busy, while also sharing tips and insights to help you on your own heart health journey. I hope you enjoy these updates and find them helpful as you strive to live well and stay healthy.
Hello & welcome
Quick check-in from Peru: Chelle and I have just finished an Amazon cruise (Zafiro) and it was magic — caiman, anaconda, a circus of monkeys, piranha fishing, three-toed sloths, turtles, and more birdlife than I could name (yes, macaws!). We also squeezed in excellent academic sessions — rural health, mental well-being at work, inguinal hernias, restless legs, imaging in dementia and more — and I presented on lipids and CT imaging for risk.
👨👩👧👦 Family notes
• Ella’s been camping up the east coast with Tallam and turns 20 next week — party incoming....she's growing into a fine person, so proud.
• Max is at uni in Samoa and continues to fit in in plenty of fishing and surfing.
🏢 Hobart updates
• Front desk: Sean and Miranda have just completed training in Melbourne — they’re set up for success...they will be a great team, so glad to have them onboard.
• We’re recruiting: if you know wonderful humans who’d suit OsteoStrong Hobart, send them our way, and keep an eye out — more soon.
• Longevity Lab (upstairs): Sarah is driving setup and prep; our first sessions are very close....very exciting. Sarah has been great.
• Cholesterol book: with three dedicated final readers and Karam; edits back to Penny next, then one last sweep from me —
Aiming for pre-orders and release before Christmas. Reach out if you are interested in a pre-print order. Just respond to this email.
🎧 Learnings from the Amazon conference (rapid takeaways)
• Rural health: small, consistent systems beat heroic sprints.
• Mental well-being at work: micro-breaks and clear boundaries and safetly matter more than gimmicks.
• Inguinal hernias: most are groin-area defects; symptoms and exam guide next steps — scan when uncertain.
• Restless legs: check iron (ferritin + transferrin saturation) before anything fancy.
• Dementia imaging: match the question to the modality; CT isn’t MRI, but each has a role.
• Lipids & risk: managing ApoB and using coronary CT thoughtfully can change outcomes.
🧠 Quiz Corner
• Last week’s answer: Chelation therapy is mainly used for heavy metals — think lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium (and in special cases iron overload and copper in Wilson’s disease).
By the way, very hard to get beyond 30 without some heavy metal exposure, so maybe think chelation before pregnancy after 30.
• This week’s question: What exactly is an inguinal hernia? (One-liner in your own words — answer next week.)
