A bone density scan is a medical test used to assist in diagnosing osteoporosis. It also helps assess whether you have a higher-than-average risk of developing osteoporosis in the future. Osteoporosis is a condition characterised by low bone density, which occurs when the structural components of bone tissue weaken over time. This weakening leads to porous, fragile bones, significantly increasing the likelihood of fractures (broken bones). A bone density scan may also be referred to as a bone density test, a bone mineral density test, or by its medical term, a DXA (Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry) test.
